YEAR 8 CHEERS RETIRED SOLDIERS

It was a beautiful day on Tuesday, 15 November 2016 when retired world war soldiers at Cobbe Barracks in Zomba were treated to a surprise visit by year eight students from Central High International School.

Twenty students sat down with the war veterans who took turns in narrating war stories to the students. The retired soldiers explained their experience during the First and Second World War and the exciting adventures to the curious year eights.

The thrilled learners had fun asking questions about the World Wars and the former soldiers expertly answered the queries.

What completely awed the students was one soldier who is aged 104. Old as he is, the retired warrior showed great strength by walking on his own with little help. The impressed students could not help it but take their time to have a photo session with the man.

The students later donated some groceries to the old soldiers as a gesture of compassion. The soldiers were so pleased to have a group of young people among them and so were the students who showed their happiness by taking selfies with the men.
It was a day well spent.

The trip is part of Central High International School’s initiative to stimulate outdoor learning. CHIS established an excursion committee which is solely responsible for organizing such school trips.
